Seventh-day Adventist leaders in Haiti report that the 7.0 magnitude earthquake killed 522 church members, the vast majority being young people. More than 55 Adventist churches were destroyed, 60 Adventist churches partially damaged and some 27,000 Adventist church members were left homeless in the capital city of Port-au-Prince.

Haiti is the poorest nation in the American hemisphere. The January 12^th earthquake is the largest earthquake disaster in this hemisphere in 200 years.
